What is Singing Ancient Prayers All About? "Singing Ancient Prayers" is the first of three installments of new worship recordings for your group or church.

In “Singing Ancient Prayers,” you’ll find old prayer texts set to singable melodies. For instance, Establish the Work of Our Hands, is from a text written by Moses over 3,500 years ago. Robert Grant, Anglican priest and long-time friend, introduced that prayer to me years ago, and it has become my prayer… and now my song.

O Most Merciful Redeemer is from the 12th century. (You may know this prayer from the song Day by Day from Godspell.) O Heavenly King, is from the Byzantine era; Grant We Beseech Thee, from the 10th century; and The Collect for Purity and Lord Jesus Stay with Us are from The Book of Common Prayer, which was compiled in the 16th century. Our Father is from Jesus’ prayer in the first century.

Don’t Just Listen, Sing… and Don’t Just Sing, Worship.

We hope these songs will become a meaningful part of your prayer and devotional life. They are written not just to be listened to, but to be sung. Try singing them a cappella, or with minimal accompaniment. I think you’ll find they work well in prayer meetings and small groups, as well as in congregational worship.

And as you sing them, think about worshiping with a vast company of brothers and sisters in Christ who have been praying these prayers for centuries.
